Safety Information & Contraindications

Your Safety & Wellbeing

Your safety and well-being are our highest priority.

Breathwork, Qi gong, sound healing, meditation, and mindfulness practices can be deeply restorative, transformational, and supportive for emotional and physical well-being. However, some practices — particularly intensive breathwork — may not be suitable for everyone.

Please read the following information carefully before booking or attending any session, class, workshop, retreat, or event.

About These Practices

Breathwork

Breathwork can be a powerful somatic and nervous system practice that may involve emotional, physical, or energetic release. Some techniques intentionally alter breathing patterns and may create intense physical or emotional experiences.

Qi Gong

Qi gong is generally a gentle movement and energy cultivation practice designed to support grounding, balance, mobility, relaxation, and vitality.

Sound Healing

Sound healing uses sound frequencies, vibration, and immersive sound experiences to encourage relaxation, nervous system regulation, and emotional restoration.

Meditation & Mindfulness

Meditation and mindfulness practices support awareness, emotional regulation, stress reduction, nervous system balance, and present-moment connection.

When Participation May Not Be Suitable

Participation in certain practices — especially intensive breathwork sessions — may not be appropriate if you currently have, or have recently experienced, any of the following conditions.

Pregnancy

Intensive breathwork sessions are not recommended during pregnancy due to changes in breathing, blood pressure, circulation, and nervous system regulation.

Gentle meditation, mindfulness, sound healing, or modified qi gong practices may be suitable with professional guidance.

Recent Surgery or Acute Injury

Please do not participate in intensive breathwork if you have experienced:

  • Major surgery within the last 6 months
  • Abdominal, cardiac, or neurological procedures
  • Unhealed injuries or fractures
  • Recent physical trauma or acute injury

Cardiovascular Conditions

Breathwork may not be suitable for individuals with:

  • History of heart attack or stroke
  • Severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Serious heart disease
  • Cardiovascular conditions where intense breathing practices may place additional strain on the body

Respiratory Conditions

Participation may not be appropriate for those with:

  • COPD (Stage II or III)
  • Severe or unstable asthma
  • Serious respiratory illness or breathing difficulties

If you have asthma, you must bring your prescribed inhaler and inform the facilitator before the session.

Neurological Conditions

Please consult a medical professional before participating if you have:

  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders
  • History of aneurysm
  • Significant brain injury
  • Neurological conditions where altered breathing patterns may trigger symptoms

Chronic & Autoimmune Conditions

Additional care and medical guidance may be required for:

  • Addison’s disease (adrenal insufficiency)
  • Unstable diabetes, particularly Type 1 diabetes
  • Lupus
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Advanced fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS / ME)
  • Severe adrenal fatigue
  • Cancer during active treatment or advanced stages
  • Terminal illness or chronic illness with active decompensation

If you are in remission or managing a chronic condition, participation should only occur following appropriate medical advice.

Mental & Emotional Health Considerations

Breathwork and other healing practices can bring emotions, memories, sensations, or trauma responses to the surface.

Participation may not be suitable if you are currently experiencing:

  • Acute psychosis
  • Severe dissociation
  • Active suicidal ideation
  • Untreated or unstable bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia or severe psychiatric instability

If you are currently under the care of a mental health professional, please consult them before participating.

Substance Use

For your safety and the safety of others:

Participation is not permitted if you are under the influence of:

  • Alcohol
  • Recreational drugs
  • Psychedelics or plant medicines

Please remain substance-free for at least 24 hours prior to attending any session or event.

Fasting & Nutrition

  • Extended fasting over 24 hours is contraindicated before intensive breathwork sessions.
  • Please ensure you are adequately nourished and hydrated before attending.
  • Avoid attending on an empty stomach (seek instructors advice) or in a physically depleted state.

Medical Disclosure

Please inform your facilitator of any:

  • Relevant medical conditions
  • Injuries or surgeries
  • Ongoing treatments
  • Medications
  • Physical limitations
  • Psychological or emotional concerns

that may affect your participation.

All disclosures are treated with respect, care, and confidentiality.
